The United Nations's (UN) latest statistics reveal that 33.2 million people worldwide suffer from the HIV virus. This figure is lower than previous statistics. Madiba says this trend is still alarming.
Local and international artists have graced the stage at the 46664 Aids benefit concert at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Former president Nelson Mandela is the driving force behind the concert to mark World Aids Day.
The 46664 concert is named after Mandela's old prison number.
Meanwhile, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has appealed to broader society to unite against the scourge of HIV/Aids. Mlambo-Ngcuka was speaking at the commemoration of World Aids Day at Mokopane in Limpopo.
She says the challenge that the country is facing is that people are not changing their sexual behavior.

Date: 2007-12-02 04:19 pm (UTC)There's one thing though... As I told you yesterday, what bothers me is that these concerts are actually preaching to your own audience. I mean the people who are able to afford attending the concert or watching it on TV are not those people whom this campaign is targeting. Those who have heard the message yesterday already know all this. Those who should really hear it, have not.
