A Xhosa praise singer has been criticised for shouting out that a cabinet minister had a large posterior.
Two isiXhosa-speaking reporters attending the launch of the Land and Agrarian Land Reform Project and Land Rights Awareness Campaign at Rockhurst Farm north of Grahamstown agreed that the young, unnamed praise singer had compared Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana to a “chicken with a big bum”.
He said: “Le ntombi inempundu ezinkulu ngathi yinkukhu ehleliphezu kwamaqanda (This woman with a big bum that looks like a chicken sitting on eggs).”
The comment was in the metaphorical context of a chicken sitting on a nest of eggs which would hatch with great benefits for the people. It did not go unnoticed by the minister.
Xingwana took the podium and laughed it off, but she did comment that sometimes praise singers could make harmful personal comments.
The praise singer did not comment, but Grahamstown journalist and part-time praise singer Kwanele Butana said these messages came straight from the ancestors, which made them difficult to control or censor.
