'We cannot apologise about our tradition'
Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has hit out at the abuse of images of bare-breasted Zulu maidens on pornographic websites.
Addressing thousands of young virgins gathered outside his eNyokeni Palace at KwaNongoma for the Reed Dance, he said rules for taking photographs needed to be tightened.
Two Italian tourists were briefly detained for photographing the maidens without accreditation. However, they were released with a warning.
The king also fumed at a "certain newspaper" which had published images of Zulu maidens undergoing virginity testing. He also blamed the elderly women responsible for testing.
"We should not allow this sacred tradition to be invaded. All nations have their secrets that should not be interfered with," said the king.
He also urged elders not to "commercialise" virginity testing, saying some had turned it into a business.
