The world needs a leader
Feb. 4th, 2021 08:59 pmOK, the nightmare of the 4 Trump years may have ended. What now? And I mean, what's next for the world? Where does Biden bring America from here on?
"US power and influence abroad ultimately will depend on his ability to bring the nation together; repair its infrastructure, health and education systems; restore public trust in democracy; and close the yawning gaps of race and class. Given this, the question is where Mr Biden and his experienced foreign policy team should focus their limited time and attention." -- That is what one Anne-Marie Slaughter writes for the Financial Times.
Yes, of course. Leading by example is the first and topmost principle in any foreign policy. But what then? Where should the US focus, and how?
So let us make this as a poll. There are obviously many areas where the US should make dramatic shifts in its foreign policy, and others where a little tweaking might help improve both her standing in international politics, and geopolitical relations as a whole. But if you had to name the ONE area where the first, most immediate, most urgent, and most resolute focus should be on, which would be it? Here are some suggestions you may or may not pick from. I'd appreciate if you also elaborate a little on your selection.
- A new Trans-Atlantic agenda (including trade, green policy, social justice, digitalisation).
- Re-enhancement of international treaties, alliances and multilateral cooperation to counter isolationism and tribalism.
- Tackling climate change, re-joining the Paris agreement, addressing the civilizational dependence on fossil fuels.
- Global health diplomacy for combating the Covid pandemic, HIV-Aids, and other disesases, and improving health conditions overall.
- Pressing for democracy and human rights worldwide, pressuring autocracies and dictatorships like Russia, North Korea, Iran, Venezuela.
- Countering China geopolitically, economically and militarily, and defending East Asia and the Pacific from Chinese encroachment.
- Tackling economic inequality and social injustice both at home and worldwide, Third World relief, fighting poverty.
- Reforming the missile defense capabilities of America and her allies, reforming NATO to meet the new challenges.
- Space exploration, space colonisation, advancement of science, education and technology (digital, energy, biological, etc).
- Getting to the forefront in new frontiers like the Arctic, Antarctica, etc, to get ahead of potential geopolitical rivals.
- The War on Drugs; pushing back against international organised crime; drug, arms and human trafficking.
Here. These are some major issues. I'm sure the list is far from being exhaustive. Your turn.
