Kosovo land swap?
Jan. 28th, 2019 09:40 amI highly doubt they would actually go for it. I mean it would be a good thing overall - finally mutual recognition that would most likely really once and for all complete the breakup of Yugoslavia. I just don't think any agreement of this sort will happen in the foreseeable future. The relations between the two governments have deteriorated lately (if that's even possible). And it seems that another military conflict is not unthinkable at this point.
Or maybe I'm wrong about the reasons, I guess: it won't happen just because it's not in the best interest of those people, who support this conflict in the first place - they need this conflict to continue, otherwise it would've been done already.
In any case, these two former (and present, to an extent) enemies do need to secure the peaceful process. It's a deal between two entities and there is no external "OK" they would need, so all the lists of countries recognizing Kosovo or not are irrelevant. That's basically what sovereignty is. two sides recognizing each other. It is obvious that a swap like that can lead to social unrest in the affected territories, so that is the only thing where an external support might be necessary. To keep order while the swap takes place.
Conversely, it could be better to just leave the situation as is now because any additional spark is going to set that dumpster on fire again. Give serbs in Kosovo the Serbian citizenship and give Albanian in Serbia the Albanian citizenship.
