Mamphela Ramphele, the former black consciousness activist who went on to become a managing director of the World Bank and a university vice-chancellor, now chairs Goldfields, the South African mining house founded by 19th century British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes. In an exclusive interview with AllAfrica's Mantsadi Sepheka she called for a fundamental restructuring of the industry, blaming the current crisis in mining on "captains of industry," the "reformist" approach of the government, and the complicity of "aristocratic" unions in "papering over the cracks".
