Elsa Fornero, the Italian welfare minister, broke down in tears as the technocratic government adopted an aggressive €24bn (£12.8bn) austerity package in a bid to stave of the crisis enveloping the country.

I sympathise with her but those are measures they will have to take. By the way Monti decided to not take a salary as a gesture of solidarity with his people. Maybe it looks too populist but at least it is something.

Italy will get out of this. Nothing is irreversible in their situation.
