Workforce diversity has been considered central to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) objective of improving the nation's health through research, but a new report suggests that renewed efforts to increase diversity are needed. In the 19 August 2011 Science, Ginther et al. report that from 2000 to 2006, black grant applicants were significantly less likely to receive research funding than were white applicants. A News story by J. Kaiser discusses the findings and a related Policy Forum outlines steps NIH is taking to understand the causes of the disparity and initiate remedies.
