Science across Cultures
In 2011, Scifest Africa celebrates fifteen years of bringing science to life for South Africans, and we invite you to join in the celebration of this significant milestone.
Our theme for 2011, “Science across Cultures”, will look at what makes us human, what makes us different, the universality of science, the contribution of different cultures, past and present, to the development of modern science, and highlight the contribution indigenous knowledge systems have made to humankind. Scifest Africa will also form part of the official celebrations of the UNESCO International Year of Chemistry 2011.
VISION
To showcase top South African research and provide a national platform for effective communication between topical national and international scientists and the general public, thereby facilitating and promoting public engagement and awareness of science.
MISSION
By showcasing the most applicable and topical science relevant to our communities through activities at Scifest Africa (regional and national), and the outreach programmes, science will be communicated in an enthusiastic and understandable way so as to change misconceptions about science and assisting our youth about to embark on a career choice to make an informed decision regarding science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a career choice.
Since its establishment in 1997 as a project of the Grahamstown Foundation, Scifest Africa, South Africa’s National Science Festival, has become very successful in changing misconceptions and attitudes of the general public towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through a range of interactive activities ranging from lectures, workshops, talks shows, exhibitions etc, visitors are shown how STEM underpins their daily lives. Learners and educators are given the opportunity to experience science outside the classroom in a fun and informative way. They are able to interact with scientists who share their work and provide career guidance thereby acting as role models for our youth.
