Walmart, the world's biggest retailer, is poised to enter the African market after bidding £1.6bn for South Africa's Massmart, but the country's trade unions are gearing up for a fight.

A woman stands in her home in the Blikkiesdorp (Afrikaans for 'Tin Town') township near Cape Town. Millions of South Africans are too poor to shop in Walmart, which threatens to further impoverish small-scale farmers, unions say.

Date: 2010-12-07 06:15 pm (UTC)but i do think this sort of poverty even exists right here in California. there is a huge income gap in many of parts here as well. especially noticeable in southern california.
just an fyi, but here there has been an expansion, or explosion if you will, of dollar stores. The most successful as of late, that i can think of, is named The 99 Cent Only Store. lol & it's just that ~ nothing costs over one dollar ($1.00). if you click on this map, do you see all those little red-dots? yes? well, those indicate a store :/ you can see how there are a ton of these little stores near the more metropolis areas. anyhow, just saying.
