Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe strode confidently into a summit of his African peers, took his seat and never flinched — as if daring anyone to challenge his right to rule.
No one in the hall did — in public at least — though some believe he had no right to join African leaders at Monday's summit following a tainted election that extended his long rule of Zimbabwe and brought a storm of Western condemnation...

Date: 2008-07-01 06:09 pm (UTC)The only free democratic and powerful country in the whole continent (South Africa) didn't show so much criticism for Mugabe although we all know that SA isn't satisfied by what's going on in its neighbor!
So who else would criticize him!! Mubarak!!! you know he got inside the hall with him to show that he is on his side!! exactly as an Arabic proverb says (Similar birds fall together!) the Northen and southern dictators do get along... Hope they get married so soon haha!
the other countries remained silent either because they aren't interested at all, or that they support Mugabe (Africa has too much dictators) or even democratic countries who hate the western interference so that they support the dictator
Shortly, I didn't, don't and won't expect too much from the African summit as long as we still live in such a disparate situation!
Strangely, Sarcozi considers Mugabe illegitimate in the same time he considers Mubarak his major ally and close friend !! POLITICS!!

Date: 2008-07-14 01:05 pm (UTC)You'll be surprised how fast this AU thing could develop - despite all its "impossibles", someone from outside is pushing for its formation, therefore it IS bound to happen.
I still hope you're not blinded about Sarko's "noble intentions" - all he wants is a new colonial era for France in the Mediterranean area. So be cautious with your praising.

Date: 2008-07-15 10:43 am (UTC)while in Africa, the union aims at uniting 52 countries of a sudden... this is not going to happen so soon or so fast...
there are lots of sides interested in pushing its formation, but the continent is full of problems, most of the counries are unable to preserve their integrity... most of countries are in civil wars and lots of them have sever tension with neighbors...
Sudan / Chad..... Ethiopia / Eritria and lots of other examples.
The Arab league is trying to unite its members who share the same language, religions, geo political interests and even share parts of history... the populations are very compassionate with the idea, yet it is trying (the Arab League) since 1945 and still is a big failure guess why?
because we failed economically... we can't exchange goods because shortly we don't produce enough food for our population nor any other goods!!
of course outsiders like USA play a role in Failing the organisation simply by giving orders to the Gulf countries who are roled by USA!!! but the main reason for success or failure of any union is economy.
you look at African economies and tell me if such a union will succeed so fast!
the time they start dealing with Afro isn't at all so soon... I am sure of that.

Date: 2008-07-15 11:50 am (UTC)Still, i acknowledge that it won't be exactly the same bind like in Europe, because of the many diversities in Africa.
By the way, you didnt tell your opinion about the (hypothetic) creation of such a union - pros and cons? I'm curious.

Date: 2008-07-15 10:53 am (UTC)WE ARE Those others I know. but we should have intentions too!! because if we don't have intentions and aims of joining this union then we deserve the outcome!!! we have minds to think with.
there is no nobility in politics, and there is no friends in politics I know that, everyone is playing the game but nobody's rules are the same I know.
but you must understand that your interests as a European man who lives in South Africa are much more different than my interests as an Egyptian man who lives in Cairo!
The Gulf started to form a strong union with a common currency and they started to fuse there economies, their newly refreshed economies by oil prices enables them to succeed in a very developed union!
mean while, the rest of what was called Arab world is gonna be left (The African part) trying to work on its large problems and arrested development.
If I have the choise to give Sarko something he needs in exchange for my country's development then fine let him take it!
but if his intentions are to take what he wants without paying!!! then we won't join his devlish union!
HE HAS INTENTIONS, AND WE HAVE, DON'T ASSUME WE DON'T!!
SO IT IS ABOUT OUR OWN INTELLIGENCE AND INTENTIONS TO MAKE THE BEST OUT OF SARKO'S DEVLISH IDEA!
