Thousands of people are expected to march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria today

Thousands of people are expected to march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria today to protest against the high crime rate in the country. Law enforcing agencies in Pretoria say they are ready for the Million Man march, the brainchild of entertainer Desmond Dube.

This is after Tshwane Metro police and organisers had a meeting in the city late yesterday to ensure that the protest runs smoothly. Metro police spokesperson William Baloyi says problems have been addressed and authorities are satisfied with the arrangements.

Yesterday, there were some doubts as to whether the march will take place. The marchers are expected to hand over their memorandum to the Presidency. Due to the expected number of marchers, the organisers have alerted hospitals in the area to be on standby for any medical problems.

Meanwhile, there will be a number of street closures in and near the Pretoria city centre for the march. Streets where some intersections will be closed, include Vermeulen, Church, Soutpansberg, Skinner, Hamilton and Nelson Mandela.
