AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has, in protest against a decision to oust him, instructed the government to take back all state benefits given to him as king.
"Let them take their car back and their stipend. If there is anything I received from them that I am forgetting they should remind me so I can give it back to them."
His demand came with a call for all other Thembu chiefs and headmen who support him to follow suit and reject all state benefits until President Jacob Zuma reverses his decision.
King Dalindyebo’s benefits include a more than R1m annual salary, car and cellphone allowances, as well as maintenance of his Bumbane palace.
In the letter Mr Zuma said he was intervening after some members of the AbaThembu royal family complained to his office over the king’s unfitting behaviour and criminal cases.
