Schools plan gets cautious welcome
Jun. 4th, 2009 11:56 amWhile the general bent of President Jacob Zuma 's state of the nation speech comments on education were positive, the speech was short of detail, teacher unions said.
"In general it can be stated that (Zuma's speech was) positive, but as always the devil will be in the detail," said Suid Afrikaanse Onderwysers- unie president Jopie Breed.

South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) president Thobile Ntola questioned the adequacy of the R140bn budget allocated to education in the 2009-10 fiscal year.
Zuma's speech ranged from ensuring universal enrolment in at least one year of pre-school education, to making SA's further education and training (FET) colleges the "primary site" for skills development, to ensuring improved access to higher education for the poor.
