Experts are drawing on South Africa's historic experience when Nelson Mandela became the first black President, to warn Americans against high expectations of Barack Obama's new presidency. Obama became the first black president of the United States early this week after a watershed electoral victory. But as he prepares to assume office, expectations of change among the general public in the streets of New York are increasing.
Obama will officially become the President of the United States only in January next year but already expectations are extremely high. Others, however, say Obama must be given a chance to settle in. Using Nelson Mandela becoming South Africa's first black president as an example, experts warn that Americans may be in for a surprise.
Obama is using the transition period to set up his administration so as to hit the ground running in January. With America in economic crisis, and facing two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, expectations growing inside the country and the world also waiting for a new American leadership, it appears that Obama is going to have a daunting four-year team.
